Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.

– Mason Cooley

My name is Kelly Do, I am 25 years old and I live in Ontario, Canada. I’m an avid bookworm and coffee lover and I have been in love with the art of storytelling for as long as I can remember. When I was seven, I used to go to my friends house everyday after school to play. He had an older sister who was a junior in high school – she was creative, loved books, and was an amazing artist. I remember her reading fairy tales to me and I fell in love instantly with storytelling and the way you can express so much with just your words. At that moment, I knew that books and stories would shape, change, and influence me on a deeper level. Books take you to another world, a place where you can live out your dreams. You read the words and you can imagine yourself in that story completely engrossed in the characters and feeling every emotion the words are conveying.

I read that book every single day, and I was overtaken by the magic of it all. I loved it so much that my friend sister gifted it to me. That was my first book that I can remember. Today, that fairy tale book is one of my most cherished treasures (even though its binding is coming off and barely hanging on) — I still have it sitting on my bookshelf today. My love for books and reading was introduced to me at a young age, and it will continue until I’m old and grey.

My older sister, Trang, who has been one of my biggest influences when it comes to my love for reading. She spent her weekends in high school at our local library (what a geek!), bringing along her little sister, where we spent our days scoping for the newest and best books – listening to music, reading magazines and browsing the web back when it was Windows ’98 (Can you even imagine???). Those are the memories I will always hold dear to my heart and will never forget. I owe it to books and the inspiration of those who have introduced me to this form of art to instill morals, values, empathy and warmth in my character. I hope to inspire others to love reading and the culture that surrounds it as much as I do. Whether that means you’re new, experienced, or thinking about making reading a part of your lifestyle. It benefits absolutely EVERYONE! Whatever the genre is, if it’s fiction or non fiction, if it’s a memoir or self help – there is always going to be something for everyone. It’s true what they say, books really are soup for the soul. It teaches us things, it helps us grow, and it’s therapeutic (not to mention extremely fun!)
